Casey O’Connell, MD, focuses on helping people facing rare diagnoses and forming bonds with her patients during the most trying moments of their lives.<\/h3>\n

Casey O’Connell, MD, was puzzled. For 20 years, her patient had been accumulating unusual and seemingly unrelated medical problems. By the time, she began treating the woman in 2007, O’Connell says the patient was dependent on oxygen, had fluid buildup in her abdomen and a high number of red blood cells causing blood clots and strokes.
\n\u201cUltimately, she had a very serious bleed\u00a0into her brain,\u201d says O\u2019Connell, associate\u00a0professor of clinical medicine at the Keck\u00a0School of Medicine of USC and member\u00a0of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer\u00a0Center, remembering how the patient spent\u00a0more than a year in and out of the hospital.\u00a0\u201cThere were many occasions when her\u00a0husband feared for her life.\u201d
\nDoctor and patient kept fighting, however,\u00a0and in 2010 a breakthrough came in the form\u00a0of a case report in the New England Journal\u00a0of Medicine, which described a patient with\u00a0the same symptoms. O\u2019Connell contacted\u00a0the doctor in Massachusetts and another\u00a0in Belgium, and the trio defined the new\u00a0syndrome, TEMPI (Telangiectasias, Elevated\u00a0erythropoietin level and erythrocytosis,\u00a0Monoclonal gammopathy, Perinephric fluid\u00a0collections, and Intrapulmonary shunting).\u00a0A targeted treatment with FDA-approved\u00a0therapies meant O\u2019Connell\u2019s patient \u201crose like Lazarus,\u201d she says, eventually shedding the\u00a0oxygen tank and leaving the hospital on her\u00a0own two feet.
\n\u201cThese are the kinds of stories that really\u00a0drive me,\u201d O\u2019Connell says. \u201cI\u2019m very interested\u00a0in rare hematologic problems and I find this\u00a0process of uncovering the truth in patients\u00a0very rewarding.\u201d
\nO\u2019Connell conducts clinical and translational\u00a0research in myeloproliferative neoplasms,\u00a0myelodysplastic disorders and cancer-related\u00a0clotting, among others.
\n\u201cMy first big research publication defined\u00a0the concept of incidental pulmonary embolism,\u00a0or the unexpected identification of blood\u00a0clots in the lung among cancer patients undergoing\u00a0routine staging CAT scans,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cNow, eight years later, I\u2019m speaking on that\u00a0same topic and it\u2019s an honor to be asked.\u201d
\nWhile she is passionate about clinical\u00a0research, O\u2019Connell is most committed\u00a0to patient care. \u201cI enjoy the opportunity to\u00a0develop relationships with patients, follow\u00a0them for many years and offer them the latest\u00a0in scientific understanding of their disease,\u201d\u00a0she says.
\nOne of those patients, Norbert Gehr, made\u00a0a lasting impression on the doctor.
\n\u201cHe was a very interesting man whom\u00a0I first met early in my career at USC Norris,\u201d\u00a0O\u2019Connell says. \u201cFor decades, he\u2019d had a\u00a0myeloproliferative disorder, which is a bone\u00a0marrow disease that produces too many\u00a0blood cells.\u201d
\nThe Brazilian-born entrepreneur had\u00a0taken medication to control the pre-leukemic condition but it ultimately transformed to\u00a0acute myeloid leukemia, a life-threatening\u00a0disease. Although O\u2019Connell prescribed an\u00a0aggressive treatment for the disease and Gehr\u00a0far outlasted the typical life expectancy for his\u00a0diagnosis, he died in 2015.
\n\u201c(Before he died,) he said he didn\u2019t want\u00a0other people to have to hear those words I\u2019d\u00a0told him when his disease had transformed,\u201d\u00a0O\u2019Connell says.
\nAs a result of his generosity, USC Norris\u00a0received a $10 million gift from The Gehr\u00a0Foundation to continue research into finding\u00a0cures for myeloid malignancies.
\n\u201cHis gift is an incredible opportunity to\u00a0study what causes leukemia and try to\u00a0stop or prevent leukemia from developing,\u201d\u00a0O\u2019Connell says. \u201cSo I have felt very emboldened\u00a0by his faith in us to really try to take\u00a0our myeloid malignancy program to the next\u00a0level with a focus not only on optimizing our\u00a0current treatment of patients but on really\u00a0trying to achieve cures.\u201d
\nFinding new treatments for these\u00a0cancers drives O\u2019Connell, who found her\u00a0way into the medical field because she\u00a0wanted to find a way to help others in a\u00a0meaningful way.
\n\u201cI really hope that my patients feel the\u00a0passion I have for accompanying them on\u00a0what is often their most difficult journey in\u00a0life, hand in hand, utilizing my medical\u00a0knowledge to bring clarity when I can and\u00a0pushing the boundaries of modern medicine\u00a0when they are eager to do so. That feels the\u00a0most rewarding for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n
