Daniel R. Mishell Jr. MD Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology Fund
Daniel R. Mishell, Jr. MD was a national and international pioneer in the areas of contraception, infertility, and menopause. He received his BA and MD degrees from Stanford University and was elected to AOA. His residency training included a year in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and an OB/GYN residency at UCLA followed by a research fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Uppsala, Sweden. He was Chair of the OB/GYN department at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine from 1978 to 2005 and was involved in the training of more than 400 residents and fellows.
He was President/Chairman of the American Board of OB/GYN and President of numerous societies, including the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation. Dr. Mishell was the founding editor of Contraception, editor of the Annual Yearbook of OB/GYN; served on many editorial boards, including the Journal of Reproductive Medicine; and was the consulting Senior Scientist for the Population Council’s International Committee for Contraceptive Research. He authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited 34 textbooks, including numerous editions of Comprehensive Gynecology; Textbook of Infertility, Contraception and Reproductive Endocrinology; and Management of Common Problems in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Seminal scientific accomplishments included the first comparison of forceps vs. vacuum extraction; the first immunoassay of serum hCG, which permitted rapid pregnancy testing; the initial reported pattern of LH, FSH, E2, and progesterone for each day of the normal menstrual cycle; novel contraceptive modalities, including steroid impregnated vaginal rings; and the first description of the non-contraceptive benefits of oral contraceptives, which is now included in the product labeling of these drugs.
Dr. Mishell spent most of his career in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He led the department for over 40 years, serving as Chairman, research mentor, and friend – always generously sharing his clinical insights, intellectual acumen, and passion for women’s health. Dr. Mishell’s career shaped the department and the many residents and fellows who trained during his tenure. His legacy lives on in their work and in the Department today.
