<p>A two-year medical and surgical program, the Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eye.keckmedicine.org\/about\/\">USC Roski Eye Institute<\/a>\u00a0embraces such major educational components as vitreoretinal surgery, medical retinal disease management, vitreoretinal imaging and diagnostic procedures, and pediatric vitreoretinal disease and surgery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-165\" src=\"https:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/ophthalmology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/08\/HumayanExaminingPatient.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/>Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship training includes outpatient, inpatient, and surgical experience at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keckmedicine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USC University Hospital<\/a>\u00a0and at the USC Roski Eye Institute, where fellows participate in faculty retina clinics and their clinical research. In addition, fellows supervise the resident retina clinics at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dhs.lacounty.gov\/wps\/portal\/dhs\/lacusc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles General Medical Center<\/a> with staffing from faculty, as well as participate in the retinopathy of prematurity service, including screening, treatment, and outpatient follow-up.\u00a0Fellows\u00a0share on-call responsibilities for the Retina Division at the USC Roski Eye Institute, USC University Hospital, and Los Angeles General Medical Center. Each fellow also has the unique opportunity to rotate for three months per year through the private practice offices of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/laretina.com\/\">Retina-Vitreous Associates Medical Group<\/a>, where additional clinical and surgical experience is garnered.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of surgical experience, fellows gain close knowledge of such procedures as repair of rhegmatogenous and tractional retinal detachments, ocular trauma management, vitrectomy, scleral buckle, pneumatic retinopexy, and combination surgeries, with exposure to endoscopic vitrectomy techniques. Fellows assist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keckmedicine.org\/services\/eye\/#our-team\">faculty at USC Roski Eye Institute<\/a> and perform surgery with supervision on patients at Los Angeles General Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>In medical retinal disease management, the focus is on age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and hereditary chorioretinal degenerations, with exposure to patients treated with the\u00a0Argus II retinal prosthesis. Imaging technologies include Fundus Photography, Fluorescein Angiography, Optical Coherence Tomography, and Ultrasonography. Additional areas of interest include ROP,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eye.keckmedicine.org\/ocular-oncology-treatments\/\">ocular oncology<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keckmedicine.org\/treatments\/uveitis-and-ocular-inflammation\/\">uveitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Teaching of medical students and residents is a major part of the fellowship, including a weekly Grand Rounds and Retina Imaging conference. Fellows participate in teaching conferences and programs involving USC medical students,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eye.keckmedicine.org\/residency\/\">ophthalmology residents<\/a>, and Department of Ophthalmology faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Fellows are expected to undertake independent investigation or participate in ongoing research projects involving basic and\/or clinical aspects of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keckmedicine.org\/treatments\/vitreoretinal-correction\/\">vitreoretinal disease and surgery<\/a>.
