Description

The USC Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year clinical fellowship that develops well-rounded sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons, academic leaders and team physicians. Our goal is to offer fellows clinical experience in the operative and nonoperative management of athletic injuries of the shoulder, knee, elbow, hip and foot/ankle.

The fellow will have broad exposure to sports medicine to learn both conservative treatment and cutting-edge surgical treatment of sports injuries, gaining experience in:

  • AC joint reconstruction
  • Adhesive capsulitis
  • Arthroscopic and open-shoulder instability surgery
  • Arthroscopic rotator-cuff repair
  • Cartilage restoration
  • Elbow arthroscopy
  • Hip arthroscopy
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Knee osteotomy
  • Meniscus transplantation
  • Multiligament knee injury
  • Primary and revision ACL surgery
  • Shoulder and elbow fractures
  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Shoulder replacement: total, reverse and revision
  • Sports foot/ankle surgery
  • Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction

A critical aspect of our fellowship is the opportunity to provide physician team coverage to USC Trojans intercollegiate athletes, a group of more than 700 world-class athletes encompassing 21 varsity sports. Fellows work closely with faculty and an excellent team of athletic trainers led by Russ Romano, ATC, head athletic trainer. Fellows will learn cutting-edge rehabilitation protocols and return-to-sport pathways at the John McKay Center on the USC University Park Campus.

A formal education component consists of weekly conferences and didactic teaching. Department residents work in an arthroscopy teaching lab and fellows function as instructors in the lab.

The fellow is expected to complete research projects over the course of the fellowship. Most fellows complete both clinical and basic science research. Clinical research involves outcomes of USC athletes who have been surgical patients.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) accredit this fellowship.

Applying for the Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Sports Medicine fellowship program is accredited by ACGME for two positions per year. We fill both positions via the San Francisco Matching Program (SF Match).

The USC Sports Medicine Fellowship program abides by all of the policies set by the SF Match and by the AOSSM regarding fellowship selection.

Applications are due each year on Nov. 1. Interviews are held in February each year.
