International Temporal Bone Course
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This course is intended for otolaryngologists and residents/fellows in training with an interest in the fundamentals of successful otologic surgery via the study of temporal bone anatomy, disease management of the ear, and applied surgical techniques.
COURSE OVERVIEW
After participating in this course, participants should be able to:
1. Describe and discuss
- basic and applied anatomy of the temporal bone
evidence-based approaches to otologic evaluation and diagnosis
basic use of the endoscope
approaches to surgical management of ear disease
2. How to practice new evidence-based surgical techniques in the dissection laboratory

- Guide to radiology techniques in diagnosing otology disease

- Endoscopic ear surgery
PROCEDURES TO BE DEMONSTRATED/PERFORMED
- Canal wall up mastoidectomy
- Canal wall down mastoidectomy
- Facial recess and extended facial recess
- Endolymphatic sac decompression
- Facial nerve identification
- Labrinthectomy
- Middle cranial fossa approach and application
- Cochlear implantation
- BAHA/SOPHONO implant techniques
COURSE LOCATION
The course will be held at the John Niparko Temporal Bone Lab on the USC Medical Center campus in Los Angeles, California.
