Oghalai Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Co-founded <strong>AO Technologies, LLC<\/strong>, focused on developing a high-performance, cost-effective <strong>OCT <\/strong>(Optical Coherence Tomography) <strong>otoscope<\/strong> with potential expansion into other OCT diagnostic devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Center for Auditory and Vestibular Exploration<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usc.edu\/cave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Center for Auditory and Vestibular Exploration<\/a>\u00a0(CAVE) is a hub of core research facilities within the Caruso Department of Otolaryngology\u2014Head &amp; Neck Surgery. Dedicated to advancing the science of hearing and balance, CAVE offers cutting-edge infrastructure and expertise for conducting auditory and vestibular research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Charaziak Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Karolina Charaziak<\/strong> received an <strong>NIDCD R21 Exploratory Research Grant<\/strong> to develop diagnostic tools for recognizing functional and physiological effects of sensory hearing loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dewey Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><strong>Dr. James Dewey&#8217;s lab<\/strong> received the first major 5-year grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders at the National Institutes of Health to study \u201cMechanisms of amplification and nonlinearity in the mouse cochlea.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Gnedeva Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Published collaborative research with with Gage Crump and the late Neil Segil was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2418098121\">PNAS<\/a> and featured on NPR\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/12\/12\/nx-s1-5220349\/this-week-in-science-fish-healing-hearing-loneliness-cures-and-conan-the-bacterium\">All Things Considered<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>identified a core gene network that suppresses regeneration in both the <strong>organ of Corti and retina<\/strong> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2411313122\">PNAS<\/a>, 2024<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Awarded a <strong>Department of Defense grant<\/strong> and secured a <strong>USC patent<\/strong> for work on <strong>Yap Inhibition for Treatment of Vestibular Schwannoma<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Auditory Physics Group<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alessandro Alto\u00e8 and Christopher Shera\u2014through a fruitful collaboration with Drs. James Dewey, John Oghalai, and Karolina Charaziak\u2014have developed a <strong>groundbreaking new model of how outer hair cells mechanically enhance the ear\u2019s sensitivity<\/strong>. This work overturns long-standing paradigms in the field. Although initially met with resistance, the new conception has rapidly gained acceptance and inspired significant follow-up research.<\/li>\n<li>A long-standing mystery in auditory science is why the inner ear processes high- and low-frequency sounds so differently. We have traced the <strong>origin of this difference to cochlear geometry<\/strong>, which tapers from regions tuned to high frequencies to those tuned to low frequencies.
