Program Leadership

Giovanna Sobrinho, MD, Outgoing Program Director

Giovanna Sobrinho, MD led the efforts to establish the new USC/Keck Psychiatry Residency Program through initial accreditation and the first recruitment cycle for the inaugural class. She will be helping to ensure a smooth transition to the new Program Director over several months. She obtained her Medical Doctorate at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 2016. She completed her psychiatry residency at the USC/LA General Residency Program as Consultation-Liaison Chief Resident, a Hospital Administration Scholar, and fellow for the Administration & Leadership Committee for the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. Throughout her training she also participated in various forms of advocacy work including as a resident union delegate. Hans Friedrich Daniel von Walter, MD, Incoming Program Director

Dr. Hans von Walter is a double board-certified geriatric psychiatrist and Section Chief of Geriatric Mental Health at the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, based at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center. He oversees one of the nation’s largest geriatric mental health programs, caring for older veterans across outpatient, inpatient, and community settings. Originally from Miami, he earned his medical degree and completed psychiatry residency at Loma Linda University, where his exposure to the unique needs of older adults sparked his passion for geriatric mental health. He went on to complete a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at UCLA, joining the West Los Angeles VA as full-time staff. Dedicated to teaching and mentorship, Dr. von Walter now serves as the incoming Program Director for the USC-Keck Psychiatry Residency, where he looks forward to shaping the next generation of psychiatrists. Outside of work, he enjoys trivia, movies, travel, and has appeared on ten game shows. As a film enthusiast, he even fulfilled a lifelong dream by attending the Oscars—seated front and center when Leonardo DiCaprio won for The Revenant. He lives with his two cats, Oscar and Asher, who often make cameo appearances on video calls.

Shane Collins, MD, MS, Assistant Program Director

Dr. Shane Collins is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at USC and a board-certified psychiatrist who provides care through the university’s mental health clinic and the USC Street Medicine team. He earned his MD and completed psychiatry residency at the University of Washington after earning a BA in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University and an MS in Global Health Sciences from UCSF. Dr. Collins is committed to serving patients from diverse backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQI+ community and individuals facing socioeconomic and cultural challenges. His research focuses on substance use disorders and the structural inequities that impact people experiencing homelessness and psychiatric illness. As a member of the USC Institute for Addiction Science, he serves as the study physician for a Phase II clinical trial exploring GLP-1 agonists in alcohol use disorder. In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Collins is deeply engaged in education, supervising residents, leading grand rounds, and teaching across USC’s medical programs. In his free time, Dr. Collins enjoys surfing, hanging out at the beach with his family, and cheering on the USC basketball teams at the Galen Center.
