Resident Benefits and Salary
Residents are employees of Los Angeles County. Resident salaries are determined in negotiations among the county’s legal bargaining unit, the Council of Interns and Residents, and the county’s Department of Health Services.
Salaries for the four-year residency are highly competitive with that of other programs. External moonlighting — off-campus in community settings — is permitted on a select basis. To moonlight, a resident must be a U.S. citizen or have a permanent visa; have a California medical license; demonstrate excellent clinical and academic performance; have completed four months of outpatient work; and receive approval from the residency program director.
