The Keck School of Medicine offers a number of outstanding opportunities for students to garner experience in biomedical research throughout their education. Students are matched with a mentor and gain experience working in the mentor’s funded lab.

Work with world-class researchers on innovative clinical, translational and basic research.
Our Programs
Under the leadership of David Hinton, Director, Medical Student Research Training and Pathology, Neurological Surgery and Ophthalmology, research opportunities are designed to provide students access to research experiences in both basic and clinical biomedical sciences.
Health, Technology, & Engineering Program (HTE@USC)
The Keck School of Medicine of USC and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering have collaborated to develop a new interdisciplinary educational program for medical and engineering students. Health, Technology and Engineering (HTE@USC) will augment the training of select doctors and engineers through project-focused collaboration resulting in the most effective and efficient solutions to real-world healthcare problems. HTE@USC is part of a larger USC effort to promote rapid advances in healthcare through research and education combining the essentials of medicine with advanced engineering and scientific technologies.
MS in Academic Medicine
Offered through the Keck School in collaboration with the Schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy, the Master of Academic Medicine program employs a blended model, combining on-line coursework with on-campus face-to-face sessions, one week each March.
MS in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences
Offered by laboratory basic science departments, the primary program objectives are to provide the necessary theoretical preparation for biomedical careers and to expose students to biomedical science-related research.
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
MS in Biostatistics and Epidemiology
The Applied Biostatistics and Epidemiology
The molecular epidemiology program is a joint effort with the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
MS in Global Medicine
This unique program answers the urgent need for professional training in global medicine concepts. It emphasizes methods used to address the global burden of disease and the search for innovative new solutions to global crises.
MS in Neuroimaging and Informatics
This advanced program of study will provide students with a deep understanding of the scientific and clinical underpinnings of neuroimaging science and how to leverage it in large-scale to make new and important discoveries in biomedicine.
Master of Public Health
Offered through the Division of Health Behavior of the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, this program prepares front-line public health workers to aid in the creation of healthy communities.
MS In Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine
This MS degree program invites you to chart the course for the medicine of the future—regenerative medicine. This is one of the first master’s programs in the U.S. in this field.
PhD Programs
After their first-year PIBBS rotation, students select a laboratory and the PhD program that best fits their research topic. Matching the program to each student’s research focus drives the choice of PhD program.
Through the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences , the Keck School of Medicine of USC also offers PhD degrees in Biostatistics, Health Behavior Research and Epidemiology.
