Associate Professor of Medical Imaging and Neuro-Imaging
Dr. Johan Van Goethem is an Associate Professor at the University of Antwerp, where he specializes in Medical Imaging and Neuro-Imaging. He holds senior positions at both the General Hospital VITAZ, where he is part of the Department of Molecular and Medical Imaging, and at the Antwerp University Hospital as a consultant in Radiology. He teaches a wide range of courses, including Biomedical Imaging Techniques, Principles of In Vivo Biomedical Imaging, Preclinical and Clinical Imaging, with a focus on neurology, neuro-imaging, and neuroscience for students of physics, biomedical sciences, and medicine.
Dr. Van Goethem is a past president and a long-standing, active member of the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR), having served on its Executive Committee for 16 years (2007-2022). He continues to play an influential role as a member of the European Board of Neuroradiology and represents Belgium for neuroradiology within the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). Additionally, he is an established member of the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) and the American Society of Spine Radiology (ASSR), and was recently honored with the ASSR Gold Medal in 2023. He also holds Visiting Professor positions at both the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Canada.
A recognized researcher in the field of neuro-imaging, with a particular focus on spinal imaging, Dr. Van Goethem boasts an h-index of 35 and has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He is the lead editor of Spinal Imaging and co-editor of The Intervertebral Disc. An esteemed speaker, he has delivered over 500 invited lectures at international conferences and courses. In 2023 he was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Neuroradiology.
In September 2024, Dr. Van Goethem published his first book for a general audience, Consciousness, available on Amazon. In this work, he embarks on a captivating journey to unravel the mysteries of consciousness, blending profound philosophical questions with clear, rigorous scientific analysis. Drawing on his extensive expertise in brain science, dr. Van Goethem demystifies the complex workings of the brain, guiding readers through the intricate puzzles of conscious experience.
