Overview

Dr. Mark L. Barr obtained his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed 10 years of postgraduate residency at New York University and Columbia University, including a 2-year NIH-sponsored research fellowship in transplantation immunology. He is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Surgery and serves as Co-Director of the USC Transplantation Institute; Chair of the Department of Surgery Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee; and Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Medical Student Clerkship. He has served as Chair of the UNOS Thoracic Transplantation Committee, as President of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), as Chair of the Thoracic Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), and on the Board of Directors of the ISHLT, the ASTS, the American Society of Transplantation, and the Board of Directors of the OPTN / UNOS. Dr. Barr was the Chair of the Advisory Committee on Transplantation (ACOT) under the auspices of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services during the 8 years of the Obama administration. He is an author / co-author on more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the fields of cardiothoracic surgery and heart and lung transplantation, has served on multiple scientific review boards for NIAID, NHLBI, and NCRR of the National Institutes of Health, and was a Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Transplantation for 15 years.
