Susanne Hempel, PhD

Susanne Hempel is the Director of the Southern California Evidence Review Center and professor in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, University of Southern California (USC). She oversees a large portfolio of evidence reviews at the Southern California Evidence Review Center (https://sites.usc.edu/socalevidencereview), leading large multi-site and multi-discipline projects. The center is one of nine Evidence-based Practice Centers selected by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ, https://effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/about/epc) and conducts evidence reviews for different federal agencies such as AHRQ and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as well as nonprofit organizations such as the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The work includes systematic reviews, scoping reviews, evidence maps, landscape reviews, and expert and community panels. Dr. Hempel teaches the Captone Project and Health Services in the U.S. in the Masters of Public Health (MPH) and Health Behavior Research Methods in the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention course. Prior, she worked at RAND, Santa Monica, and the Center for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD), University of York, UK. Her academic background is personality psychology with a PhD from the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.
