Mission

Achieve a climate of equity and safety for all at the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM), working in close collaboration with culture and engagement initiatives across the KSOM and the University and with an intersectional approach, with a focus on providing education concerning issues of gender discrimination and harassment.

Values

Gender discrimination and sexual harassment have a detrimental impact on many facets of our organization, ranging from loss of talented faculty and diverse perspectives to negative patient outcomes.

The establishment of the Center for GEMS provides a clear path forward to effect culture transformation that supports a culture that promotes integrity, respect, and belonging for those of diverse background and viewpoints.

Goals

Establish processes and practices to promote equal opportunity in recruitment, faculty development, and across the career pipeline.

Achieve and sustain equal pay for equal work regardless of gender or other protected characteristics and as provided by law.

Achieve and sustain fair, merit-based representation in leadership for all, regardless of gender or other protected characteristics.

Create and sustain a culture that supports diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, psychological safety and belonging for all, and is intolerant of prohibited discrimination and harassment, including sexual harassment and gender discrimination.

Serve as a body to ensure transparency and data-informed approaches to meet these goals.

Our Programs

  • The Center for GEMS collaborates with experts across the Keck School of Medicine and USC to provide trainings and education to Keck School departments on a variety of topics. We are not currently offering trainings as we are working on rebuilding our capacity to offer them.

    Advisory Board

The GEMS Advisory Board serves in an advisory capacity to the GEMS Leadership Team and helps to support the mission of the Center. View current roster here.

Members of the Advisory Board are selected based on their roles at USC and their active participation increases opportunities for cross-collaboration and helps to ensure greater alignment across the institution. The Advisory Board meets semi-annually.

  • Inclusion Resource Groups (IRGs)
The Center for GEMS is a proud co-sponsor of the Inclusion Resource Groups (IRG) Program. The mission of the IRG Program is to foster and advocate for an inclusive campus community and intentionally contributes to a sense of belonging and being valued. Please visit the IRG page to learn more.

  • NASEM Action Collaborative  on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

USC is a founding member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. Recognizing the widespread impact of sexual harassment throughout academia, this NASEM collaborative is charged with finding ways to prevent sexual harassment at all levels and in all disciplines, taking an active approach to effect genuine systemic change through policies and practices. To learn more, visit the USC NASEM page on the EEO-TIX website.
