The Musculoskeletal Imaging section has 4 full-time faculty. and the fellowship program is offered at 5 major facilities: Keck Hospital of USC, HealthCare Consultation Center, Los Angeles General Medical Center, Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital, and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital. Our faculty, the rich clinical material, and our excellent relationships with the referring clinicians combined creates an exceptional educational environment for honing all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology. At the conclusion of their training, our fellows are well- prepared for the challenges of both academic and private practice settings. Our program alumni occupy a variety of positions throughout California and the United States.

Curriculum

  • We are a major academic referral center for musculoskeletal disorders, and as such our fellows gain substantial exposure to the full gamut of musculoskeletal pathologies in our busy oncology, sports medicine, rheumatology, infection, metabolic imaging, and trauma services. The Musculoskeletal Imaging section is responsible for interpretation of adult musculoskeletal plain radiographs encompassing essentially the entire range of musculoskeletal pathologies.

Our facilities include state-of-the-art MRI (3.0 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla) and CT (up to 320 slice) equipment with dedicated musculoskeletal packages such as metal artifact reduction software and dual-energy acquisition capabilities. We provide interpretation for all adult and pediatric musculoskeletal MRI and CT examinations, while consultations on musculoskeletal MRI and CT studies acquired at non-USC facilities offer further exposure to interesting cases.

Our section also utilizes the most advanced ultrasound equipment with features such as shear-wave elastography as well as contrast-enhanced ultrasound, primarily in our rheumatology, sports medicine, and oncology services for evaluation of tendon, joint, and muscle pathologies as well as soft tissue masses.

  • Our section leads several didactic and case conferences for fellows and residents covering a full range of pathologies in diagnostic musculoskeletal radiology. Our fellows also participate in weekly didactic conferences offered by orthopedic surgeons.

We actively participate in several multi-disciplinary conferences including weekly orthopedic oncologic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine conferences, as well as a monthly rheumatology conference which provide in-depth experience in diagnosis, management, and follow up of complex cases.

There are ample scientific and educational research opportunities in musculoskeletal imaging available to our fellows. Cutting edge imaging equipment, including a high-field 7.0 Tesla MR scanner with dedicated musculoskeletal sequences available.

We also routinely publish in high-impact radiology journals and are active at many national meetings.
