Keck School ortho team

The USC Mark and Mary Stevens Center for Orthobiologics at the Keck School of Medicine is at the forefront of regenerative medicine for orthopaedics. With a vision to revolutionize the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, the Center is addressing some of the most urgent challenges in orthopaedic care: osteoarthritis, cartilage and ligament injuries, bone trauma, and muscle degeneration.

Traditional surgical approaches can repair damage but do not always restore long-term joint and tissue health. The focus of the Stevens Center is to develop therapies that use a patient’s own stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and other biologics to regenerate cartilage, repair bone, heal tendons and ligaments, and even prevent progression of degenerative diseases.

Leveraging USC’s strengths, including a top 10 NIH-funded Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, close ties with the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research, and partnerships with the Viterbi School of Engineering, the Center is uniquely positioned to translate basic science into tangible treatments.

The plan is to relieve pain and suffering, restore mobility, and allow patients to live active, fulfilling lives, whether that means a young athlete returning to sport after a ligament injury, or an older adult maintaining independence and quality of life.

  • To create treatment regimens that prevent and cure conditions such as osteoarthritis, repair cartilage defects, heal ligament and tendon injuries, and regenerate bone using a patient’s own cells. The vision is to revolutionize musculoskeletal care through biologics and translational research.

  • Established with a $10 million gift from USC Trustee Mark Stevens ’81, MS ’84, and his wife Mary, the Center was created to accelerate the development of orthobiologics and to translate discoveries from the lab to patients.
