Residency

The Department of Pathology supports 27 Post-graduate physician residency positions and 14 post-residency fellowship positions. Occasionally, residents choose anatomic pathology (AP) alone but most complete an integrated AP/Clinical pathology (CP) program.AP and CP rotations are intermixed throughout the 4 years of training at various institutions including Los Angeles General Medical Center, USC Keck/Norris University Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Research is strongly encouraged with numerous, available research projects in various fields. Medical student teaching is also encouraged at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.

Resident AP/CP program
27 months of AP, 19 months of CP
The AP/CP program provides early exposure to all fields of pathology, 2 months of elective, and up to 3 weeks for vacation or additional elective per academic year. Structured curriculum and graduated responsibilities are emphasized in both AP and CP rotations.

AP rotations
Anatomic Pathology Boot Camp (1 month), Autopsy/Liver/Neuropathology (3 months), Surgical Pathology (5 months at Los Angeles General Medical Center and 5 months at Keck Hospital of USC), Gynecologic Pathology (5 months at Los Angeles General Medical Center), Dermatopathology (1 month), Renal/Pulmonary Pathology (1 month), Cytopathology (4 months), Pediatric Pathology (1 month at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles), and Medical Examiners (1 month at Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office).

CP Rotations
Hematology-Hematopathology (6 months), Transfusion Medicine (4 months with 2 weeks at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for Apheresis), Microbiology (2 months), Chemistry/Informatics/Lab Management (2 months), Molecular Pathology (1 month), Keck Clinical Pathology (2 months), Coagulation and Hemostasis (1 month 3 of 4 weeks at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), and Cytogenetics/Molecular Cytogenomics (1 month at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles).
