Sabbaticals

Tenured faculty and Clinical Scholars are eligible for sabbatical.  Sabbaticals must be requested through the annual application process, which occurs at the beginning of each calendar year for sabbatical requests starting July 1. As part of this process, faculty members must fill out the Request for Leave Form, selecting the type of sabbatical. For more information, contact the Faculty Affairs Department at KeckFA@med.usc.edu or (323) 442-1619. Once approved, faculty members and departments are notified, and Faculty Affairs and Med Finance will update Workday.

Faculty Request for Leave

Emeritus Appointments

The President confers the honorary designation of Emerita or Emeritus status upon the recommendation of the faculty member’s department or equivalent academic unit and the Dean. The designation may be awarded after 10 years of service to tenured or full-time non-tenure-track faculty on or after retirement or be preapproved in contemplation of retirement to be effective upon retirement. You can find further details in Section 9-A of the Faculty Handbook.

The department’s request to OFAAI for emeritus status must include:

  • the candidate’s CV
  • a signed letter of resignation or retirement agreement
  • a letter of support from the dept chair, including the results of a faculty vote

OFAAI will process the request, and the Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs will notify the appointee upon completion.

Emeriti and other retired faculty may access USC’s Emeriti Center and their many resources and events.
