Grounded in the PILLARS Framework

At the Keck School of Medicine, our faculty professional development workshops are grounded in theory, guided by evidence, and driven by continuous quality improvement (CQI). We center inclusiveness and belonging in all our efforts, supporting faculty as they navigate the complexities of leadership and academic medicine’s rapidly changing landscape.

Our programs are built around seven foundational pillars, each with targeted competencies that foster growth, excellence, community engagement, and a strong sense of connection. These pillars are shaped by the USC Unifying Values — Integrity, Excellence, Community, Well-being, Open Communication, and Accountability — and informed by national standards from the AAMC, LCME, and the Kern National Network for Flourishing in Medicine (KNN). We also incorporate principles from the Stanford WellMD Model, emphasizing a culture of wellness, efficiency of practice, and personal resilience. Through rigorous evaluation and ongoing refinement, we ensure our programs remain responsive, impactful, and empowering for all faculty.

Our workshops are designed to address the PILLARS competency domains:

P – Professional and Career Development
I – Institutional and System Knowledge
L – Leadership and Management
L – Learning and Educational Development
A – Academic Scholarship and Research
R – Resilience, Well-being, and Inclusion
S – Service and Engagement

These domains represent essential supports for faculty success, enabling individuals to thrive in clinical, research, educational, and community roles while advancing institutional missions and personal well-being.

We continuously evaluate our workshops to determine their impact on faculty outcomes and use participant feedback and data to improve future programming.

Evaluating Impact

To ensure continued improvement and relevance, we will evaluate these workshops regularly to determine their impact on faculty outcomes, and use participant feedback and data to enhance future programming.

We look forward to learning and growing together each week!
