Hematology/Oncology Fellowship

Overview

We currently have 18 clinical fellows distributed between the Divisions of Hematology and Oncology over the span of a 3-year fellowship.

Program Highlights

  • Exposure to a large faculty of internationally recognized authorities in various areas of medical oncology, hematologic malignancies, and general hematology.
  • Clinical exposure to a diverse patient population at three training sites on one campus: Los Angeles General Medical Center (one of the largest teaching hospital in the US); the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Hospital; and the Keck Hospital of USC.
  • Ability to work within the multi-disciplinary environment of the NCI-designated cancer center USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
  • Ability to work within the academic, research, and clinical environment of the Divisions of Hematology and Oncology, with its world renowned clinical and translational research expertise and ground-breaking clinical trials.

Mission statement

The mission of the USC/Los Angeles General Medical Center Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is to train physicians to be compassionate, highly competent clinicians, scholars, and leaders in the field of hematology and medical oncology. With a wide breadth of scholarly activity and clinical experience, we train physicians who can pursue either academic or community-based careers. We are committed to our long-standing tradition of providing state-of-the-art care to the diverse and underserved patient population in the Los Angeles area.

Research

  • The agenda of the Division of Medical Oncology has an emphasis on translational research based on fundamental concepts of molecular biology. This approach has been predicted on knowledge of anticancer drug resistance, increased understanding of the genes associated with familial and sporadic patterns of malignancy, the immunologic basis of tumor response and resistance, and a more precise assessment of the pharmacology of novel anticancer compounds. Members of the Medical Oncology Division have assumed leadership roles in the scientific agenda of the Southwest Oncology Group and California Cancer Consortium.

  • The research interests of the Hematology Division are diverse. They include basic and clinical research in malignant and non-malignant hematology. Research programs are carried out in various laboratories in the areas of coagulation, oncolytic viruses, and CAR T-cell.

Medical Students

  • Involves approximately eight weeks per year, as part of a newly-developed curriculum covering Hematology and Clinical Immunology. The course emphasizes cases-based learning with involvement of all tenured or tenure-track faculty. Each day involves approximately four to five hours of small group instruction, with one faculty member directly responsible for approximately 20 students. In addition, didactic lectures are also given during this time period, on a daily basis.

  • Our faculty is responsible for this elective, which takes two to four students for a four- to six-week elective on the Hematology Consultation Service. This elective is “over-subscribed”, and, as a consequence, approximately four to six additional students are taken each year on a special elective on ward 14-600.
