Presentations at conferences and symposia are critical for the professional development of medical students engaged in research. Presenting work at scientific conferences allows medical students to share their research with experts, receive constructive feedback, and engage in discussions that can refine their ideas. It also helps build professional networks and communication skills, enhancing students’ academic and residency prospects.

Student presenting a research poster at a conference

We have limited funds available to supplement student research travel.

Students are responsible for ensuring their research travel complies with the KSOM Attendance, Absence, and Compliance with Make-Up Assignments Policy.

The number of days excused for a presentation will be determined by the Office of Student Affairs with consideration of the timing of the student’s presentation using the following criteria:

  • Participation in the conference is limited to the presentation and travel arrangements to and from the conference must minimize the time away from a required clerkship or course.
  • Absences will not be granted during TCP, Intersession, HJSC Seminar, TTR or Senior Seminars.
  • Students will be granted 0.5-day absences for presentations at the KSOM Research Forum or any departmentally sponsored research event.
  • Students will otherwise be limited to:
    • A maximum of 2 conference presentations during a course in each of the clerkship and post clerkship phases.
    • A maximum of 3 days of absence for one conference if warranted, e.g., an international conference.
