Do I have to get an IRB for my research?

In general, if you’re doing research (a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge) involving human subjects (a living individual about whom an investigator conducting research obtains data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or identifiable private information), then you need IRB approval. Some exceptions apply, including publicly available de-identified datasets.
