The Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at Keck School of Medicine of USC has released its 2023-2024 Annual Report. The report reflects the wide-reaching scope of work in the Department and the impactful contributions its staff, faculty, students, and alumni have made to the field of population and public health, and to communities near and far.

This year, the Department once again ranked #2 in terms of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Funding from NIH and other awards have enabled groundbreaking research by the Department’s highly decorated investigators in areas like cancer, genetics, disease, maternal and child health, environmental health, and more. Research teams made new discoveries and received notable recognition, including Marlena Fezjo, PhD, being named one of Time Magazine’s 2024 ‘Women of the Year.’ Faculty brought expert scientific testimonies to political forums, and teams worked with communities in Los Angeles and around the world to translate health research to health outcomes.

The Department also celebrates the achievements of its students, alumni, and education programs. The Master of Public Health program received a perfect score and re-accreditation from the Council on Education in Public Health for seven years, and the Department put into action new initiatives progressing its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Students and alumni received prestigious awards, and faculty were recognized by the University for their expertise and leadership.

“We look forward to continuing to be a growing source of discoveries, outstanding young professionals, and service to the population health needs of the Keck School of Medicine, USC, California and the world,” says Howard Hu, MD, MPH, ScD, Flora L. Thornton Chair of the Department.
