The LAG/USC IDEA Committee

The OB/GYN residents and faculty created the IDEA committee in 2018 to promote inclusive excellence within our program and enhance the experience amongst our medical faculty, staff, residents, and patients. Our mission statement is to promote culture, community, and connection for colleagues and patients while improving the health care disparities impacting our patient communities.

Our initiatives include:

  1. Recruitment and Retention
We provide a variety of mentoring and support group resources including a pipeline mentoring program between medical students and residents, as well as between residents and USC OB/GYN alumni. Our mentoring program allows for natural, organic relationships to form to assist proteges with navigating medicine. The residents are supported by a culture and engagement Chief Resident, a unique role created in 2019, to ensure decisions made within the residency program are made with an inclusive lens and as a source of support for residents navigating medicine, including retreats to promote community and support.  We also provide an annual scholarship awarding department members who have excelled in promoting inclusive excellence and community engagement.
  2. Engagement
We provide regular lectures & interactive workshops for medical students, residents, and faculty to discover ways to become better providers for patients. We host Grand Round lectures in which leaders within the field of community building and health care disparities present to our department. We hold morbidity and mortality conferences where cases are discussed from an inclusive culture standpoint and social drivers of health are critically analyzed.
  3. Research
We have active research geared towards evaluating current health care disparities and studies regarding residency experiences & wellness amongst providers. We also strive to create studies regarding our patient’s experiences and support within our hospital and how experiences correlate to patient outcomes.
  4. Community Engagement
We have formed important partnerships with community partners in Los Angeles including East LA Women’s Center, AAIMM Doula Program, amongst others to learn how best we can provide care for the community we serve through provider education and patient centered events.
