Emergency and Trauma Radiology Fellowship

Fellows receive comprehensive training in poly-trauma imaging and acute care imaging.  The year is divided into thirteen 4-week blocks.  Nine of these 4-week blocks will be located in the Los Angeles General Medical Center Emergency Radiology Division.  On average, the fellow will have 4.25 shifts a week in the Emergency Radiology Division.  The program director and fellow will decide the specific coverage times based on what will be most beneficial for the fellow’s learning experience.

We also strongly believe that fellows should have dedicated training in Neuroradiology and Musculoskeletal imaging and offer a 4-week block in both of these subspecialties to help round out the fellow’s knowledge base.  The fellows will have the option for two additional 4-week blocks in electives near the end of the fellowship year to tailor their experience to the career they have chosen.

The fellows will have ¾ academic day each week to pursue research and educational interests.  Fellows will be mentored and guided in original research, educational exhibits and lectures.  The USC Radiology Department also has a dedicated team of researchers and research assistance to help with research pursuits. The ETRF fellows will also have ample opportunity to teach and train medical students and residents.  The fellow will also act as an instructor in the latter half of the academic year.

Facilities and Interdepartmental Collaboration

The University of Southern California offers a one-year fellowship position in emergency and trauma imaging. The Emergency and Trauma Radiology Fellowship (ETRF) is specifically designed to engage fellows in real-time, high-level trauma imaging at Los Angeles General Medical Center, one of the busiest Level I trauma centers in the country. Los Angeles General Medical Center sees 25% of the total volume of trauma patients in Los Angeles County. Los Angeles General Medical Center is also one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the country and is not only a tertiary academic center, but also a county hospital, which serves the underserved population of Los Angeles County. Our Emergency Radiology Division has a strong working relationship with Acute Care (Trauma) Surgery. Our collaborative efforts include: Real-time/at the scanner consultation during all trauma cases, review of these cases with the trauma staff (Faculty, Fellows and Residents) and weekly Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Mortality and Morbidity conference with Emergency Radiology reviewing the imaging of cases that are presented. We also collaborate with ACS on research projects. The Emergency Radiology Division also works closely with the Emergency Medicine physicians, whether that be in-person or on-the-phone consultations, projects to help better workflow and throughput, educational exchanges of residents, and collaborative projects to teach ultrasound to medical students.

Los Angeles General Medical Center offers a diverse patient population and the ETRF fellows are exposed to a robust and comprehensive training experience.

Thank you for your interest in the USC Emergency and Trauma Radiology Fellowship.  The Emergency and Trauma Radiology fellowship does not participate in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).  Applications and interviews take place on a rolling basis.

A California Medical License is required prior to fellowship start. Applications for licensure should be made to the CA Medical Board by November in the year to your fellowship appointment. A California Radiology Supervisor and Operator Certificate (fluoroscopy license) is also required prior to fellowship start. Obtaining this certificate involves fee payment as well as a written exam. Applications for licensure should be made to the California Department of Public Health- Radiologic Health Branch (CDPH-RHB), in November of the year prior to your appointment.
