USC Intraoperative Neurologic Monitoring Fellowship Program

The Department of Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of University Southern California (USC) is offering a one-year, non-ACGME Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship with an emphasis on Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (IONM). The IONM fellowship program provides an emphasis on fundamental and advanced application of clinical neurophysiology in the operating room.

Curriculum

The fellowship program is based on direct participation of the fellow under structured supervision by the surgical neurophysiology faculty. The fellow will directly participate in the technical aspects and interpretation of evoked potentials as well as intraoperative monitoring. The fellow will also be trained in the scientific and clinical knowledge of basic neurophysiology science and instrumentation.

The surgical neurophysiology faculty will instruct the fellow in real-time IOM patient set up and OR monitoring techniques using evoked potentials: SEP (sensory), MEP (motor), BAEP (auditory), VEP (visual), as well as spontaneous or trigger electromyography/EMG.

The fellow will be trained in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring at Keck Hospital of USC.

Objectives

  • To be involved with all IONM monitored cases
  • Accurately identify intraoperative neurophysiological changes
  • Understand the interpretation of changes in the context of clinical procedures
  • Efficiently communicate information to surgeons so appropriate action can be taken to avoid neurological injury

Requirements

Applicants must be graduates of an ACGME Accredited Neurology residency and eligible for medical licensure in the state of California.

Training Faculty

Marvin Gong, DO
Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology
Director, Surgical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program
