The Department of Population and Public Health Sciences has released its 2024-2025 annual report. Again ranked #2 nationally in terms of NIH funding for departments of public health within schools of medicine, the Department remains at the forefront of transformative research, rigorous education, and meaningful community engagement. It has continued to advance knowledge across critical domains shaping the future of population health.

Department researchers made significant strides in areas including brain health, climate-related health risks, exposures, substance use, disease, and genetics. With over $77 million in total costs for grants, contracts, and gifts in FY24, and exceptional collaboration across divisions, the University, and community partners, the Department plays an impactful role in helping to shape public health policy and practice in Los Angeles and beyond.

Students joined alumni in providing contributions extending far beyond the classroom – through publications, fellowships, awards, impacts in community health, and influencing policy. Education leaders completed a four-year, department-wide curricular review, innovating and advancing approaches to prepare graduates to be leaders their field.

Community engagement remains a central pillar of the Department’s mission and vision, and this year the Department formalized principles to guide this work. Through partnerships with community leaders and organizations, members of the Department worked to serve the needs of communities – whether considering long-term or short-term health, addressing disparities, or providing crucial disaster relief.
