• Launched in 2023, the Keck Well-being Survey (KWBS) has established an historic, baseline measurement of core well-being constructs, such as burnout and professional fulfillment, for the entire KSOM community of faculty, staff, and learners. The survey represents a collaborative effort between the Keck School, Keck Medicine, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and LA General. Leadership has been provided department-specific reports, and department-specific action plans – along with a discussion of “What’s in it for leaders?”

An institution-wide summary report has also been provided to the broader Keck School community with an explanation, resources, and an action plan. We have generated department-specific reports and provided those to department leaders. We have offered each department a confidential debrief to review results, strengths and areas for opportunity; to brainstorm how to communicate results transparently back to teams; and to co-create an action plan with suggested interventions to address areas of concern.

More information about the survey including FAQ and privacy statement is located here.

  • The Well-being Directors Grant Program allows departments/units to nominate a new position: Well-being Director. This position is endorsed by their leader and will provide oversight of all aspects of well-being efforts for their department/unit. An initial cohort of 10 individuals began their one-year terms in July 2023.

We are in close communication with the 10 directors, meeting with them regularly to review status. The Office of Well-Being plays a hands-on role in guiding project development and implementation. We also host twice yearly Well-being Summits to allow directors to present their work to the broader Keck School community.

This program is meant to dovetail with the well-being survey effort above, so that survey data can help inform meaningful interventions launched by the Well-being Directors.

  • A group of individuals nominated by their chairs to guide well-being efforts for their departments. We formed close relationships with chairs in order to encourage them to recruit and support qualified well-being champions. We have nominated a champion for all but one department, covering clinical departments, basic science departments, and staff groups. We have developed a monthly educational course entitled the Champions Educational Series, where we create a curriculum of both internal and invited experts who provide education on how to effectively implement unit-level well-being interventions. This year, we will host a retreat for the champions to focus on strategic planning and cross-department collaborative projects.
