Anesthesia and Practice Management

The Anesthesiology Department at the Keck School of Medicine strongly believes that residents must not only be able to navigate the complexities of the OR environment, but also have the skill sets to understand the business/legal environment that they work in.  Our Practice Management program aims to expose all our residents to the economic challenges they can expect to face.  With a combination of Grand Rounds and individual didactic lectures, we will explore the following Practice Management subjects:

Anesthesia Reimbursements:

  • Billing Units, Coding, Bundled Payment programs, Government vs Private Insurers and their impacts on reimbursement, Hospital subsidies, future reimbursement models

Compliance:

  • EMR vs Paper Charting, Medicare Documentation Requirements, Anesthesia Coding

Legal and Ethical Issues:

  • Medical Malpractice, Duty of Care, Questions of Conscience,
  • How the law directly/indirectly affects our practice, Anesthesia Contracts (both Group and Individual)

Advocacy:

  • Politics in Anesthesiology, Teamwork to Protect Patients, the Importance of Being Involved

Hospital Relationships:

  • OR Board Management Skills, Engaging with Hospital Administrators and Surgeons to promote the efficient management of the OR and success of both the Hospital and the Anesthesia Group, Employment Model vs Contractor Model

Our goal is to prepare our residents to become the future leaders in the field of Anesthesiology, whether it be in the Operating Room or the Board Room.
