Professional Development Opportunities

The Department of Medical Education (DME) provides direct support for Keck faculty and residents who wish to improve teaching skills and conduct educational scholarship. In coordination with Keck medical education leaders, the DME provides a wide range of services and training from best practices in learning, teaching, providing feedback, and scaffolding learners in need, to cultivating self-directed learners in the classroom and the clinical setting.

  • Customizable Faculty Development Session: DME offers faculty development sessions around assessment and feedback, curriculum design, instructional design and strategies, program evaluation, and educational scholarship and research in the form of grand rounds, noon conferences, interactive workshops and retreats. Other topics and formats may be developed upon request.
  • Interactive workshops: DME offers interactive workshops targeted to specific teaching needs, including but not limited to creating a positive learning environment, identifying learners in difficulty, assessing learners and providing effective feedback, small group teaching, and teaching in the clinical setting.
  • Customizable Resident-As-Teacher Sessions: The department provides resident-as-teacher workshops to clinical departments and direct observation of clinical teaching with targeted feedback.
  • Individual Consultations: One-on-one or small-group consultation sessions addressing the specific needs of the individual faculty or a small group of faculty (disciplines, systems, clerkships, etc.) are available upon request.
