Primary care in the community

Our program follows a “clinic-first” model that prioritizes the continuity clinic experience and the longitudinal relationship with patients. We have diverse clinic experiences that offer broad clinical exposure in different healthcare systems and patient populations. Our residents’ home clinic is Keck Medicine Family Practice, which is embedded in a tertiary and quaternary healthcare system, and serves a racially and ethnically diverse population, including USC employees, with many medically complex patients. We are constructing a new state-of-the-art residency clinic in Arcadia in the heart of San Gabriel Valley and anticipate moving in Academic Year 2024-2025. Our residency program has also partnered with a local Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), AltaMed Health Services, who has a 50-year history of expanding access and providing high-quality care in multi-ethnic and underserved communities in Southern California. Residents in their PGY-2 and PGY-3 year provide primary care at AltaMed’s Huntington Park-Slauson clinic in a longitudinal community-based Family Medicine ambulatory rotation.

Partnerships with leading teaching hospitals

Our residency program has partnered with leading teaching and community hospitals in Los Angeles to provide well-rounded and diverse training. Residents receive state-of-the-art pediatric training at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, a leading academic and community hospital with a tradition of excellence in caring for children and their families. Residents also rotate at Los Angeles General Medical Center, a world-class teaching hospital and Level-One trauma center serving Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents. Residents complete obstetrics rotations at CA Hospital Medical Center, a community hospital located in the heart of Downtown LA.

Unique Street Medicine curriculum

Residents will join our Keck Medicine of USC Street Medicine team, providing primary care for people experiencing homelessness on the streets – under a freeway overpass, on a bus bench, by the riverbed. By standing with and caring for the most vulnerable in Los Angeles, our residents will hone their tools to fight for health equity and social justice. All residents will have yearly Street Medicine rotations, with ample opportunity for longitudinal clinical experience and leadership in this growing field.
