In partnership with the families and communities we serve, the Department of Family Medicine leads advances in research, education and patient care. Since 2015, our patient visits have increased by 250% and research grant funding has increase 35% year over year, with studies in elder justice, geriatrics, HIV care, and primary care for vulnerable populations. Recent awards include a $3.75 million Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and a $1.5 million HRSA grant for physician assistant training in street medicine and opioid care.

The department is home to USC Street Medicine, which provides free direct care to unhoused Angelenos.

Our residency program, founded in 2021, was the first at Keck Medicine of USC. Residents train across the USC Health Sciences Campus and at clinics in Los Angeles, Arcadia, Glendale, and Pasadena. We also run a Primary Care Physician Assistant Program — one of the few in the country that emphasizes medical Spanish.

Research

From lab to clinic to community, our studies produce insights that improve quality of care for all. We place special emphasis on vulnerable populations — such as older adults, those experiencing homelessness and those seeking gender-affirming care.
