Empowering Brain Health: Strategies for Prevention

“People should know, if you’ve discovered you are an APOE ε4 carrier, you have a place to go.”

Dr. Hussein Yassine, Director of Center For Personalized Brain Health

Alzheimer’s impacts both patients and their loved ones. Preventing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia is crucial for the well-being of individuals, families and communities. Through early intervention and healthy lifestyle choices, it’s possible to significantly delay or even prevent the onset of cognitive decline.

The USC Center for Personalized Brain Health at Keck Medicine offers preventive care to lower the risk of dementia and preserve brain health. Directed by Hussein Yassine, MD, Professor of Neurology and Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, and supported by Jinseo Choi, Nurse Practitioner – Practitioner Spotlight, our center is committed to bringing personalized prevention to people facing higher risk of dementia.

Early Prevention

Our center connects neurology with lifestyle and genetics as a path to early detection, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. A primary focus is the Apolipoprotein E4 (APOE ε4) allele which is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. APOE ε4 is prevalent in upwards of 25% of the general population and more than 50% of patients with AD. We employ cutting-edge imaging techniques and other biological markers to understand the implications of APOE ε4 on the brain.

Personalized Approach

The center takes a personalized approach, tailoring a combination of biobehavioral and pharmacological intervention to fit each patient’s specific needs for preventing cognitive decline. For those with a family history of dementia or concerns about developing it, we offer genetic testing and thorough neuro-endocrine-vascular evaluations to understand their Alzheimer’s risk. Based on these assessments, we create customized plans to manage a patient’s individual risks in a synergistic manner.

Understanding Prevention

Why Prevention Matters

Preventing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia is crucial for reducing the overall burden of these diseases on individuals, families, and society. Early intervention and healthy lifestyle choices can significantly delay or even prevent the onset of cognitive decline, improving quality of life and longevity.

Key Prevention Principles

In addition to joining a clinical study – Study Enrollment Hub or taking advantage of other community resources – Community Resources, there are practices that individuals can pursue for preventative benefit.
