Extern Program

The USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding applicant for the Audiology Extern position. This position is open to applicants seeking a full-time 4th year (or 3rd year, if applicable) clinical placement as a condition of completing the AuD degree from an accredited university.

At the USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology, our skilled team provides comprehensive audiologic assessments to patients of any age. Our otolaryngologists and audiologists use research-based techniques to carefully assess our patient’s hearing status. Clinical services include full scope intervention and management options (hearing aids, bone conduction devices, cochlear implants, and auditory brainstem implants). In addition, we offer specialized practice in vestibular and balance testing, pediatric audiology services, auditory verbal therapy, and educational support services.

USC Caruso Family Center (USC CFC) is pleased to invite motivated and passionate audiology students to apply for our externship designed to prepare you for a career in pediatric audiology. USC CFC providers comprehensive clinical experience of the full breadth of pediatric audiology services and includes educational training partnered with the California Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (CA-LEND) fellowship. Our externs will gain the skills necessary to provide high quality care to any pediatric patient population.

Clinical experience:

  • Diagnostic audiologic evaluations for all ages and levels of development (ABR, VRA, CPA, standard audiometry)
  • Hearing aid evaluations, fittings, and follow up services
  • Bone conduction device evaluations, fittings/activations, and follow up
  • Cochlear implant evaluations, activations, programming, and management
  • Diagnostic vestibular services for pediatric and adult patients

Program expectations:

  • Strong interest in pediatric audiology and models of family-centered care
  • Commitment to providing evidence-based practices to a diverse clinical population
  • Participation in weekly CA-LEND seminar and leadership project
  • One-on-one mentoring by full time, experienced, pediatric audiologists

USC CFC is following the 2025 ACEN externship timeline. Interviews for qualified candidates will take place via Zoom from 9/22/25-9/23/25 with additional dates available for extenuating circumstances.

Requirement

Minimum Education: Doctoral candidate

Minimum Experience: 0 – 6 months

Minimum Field of Expertise: Audiology experience. California license eligible. Knowledge of safety precautions appropriate to clinical setting. Completed coursework required by the applicant’s university for audiology doctoral degree. This position satisfies required 1 year clinical placement to complete doctoral degree and qualify for state licensure.
