Policy Statement:

The Keck School of Medicine recognizes formative assessment and feedback as a critical component of the professional growth and development of students.

Policy Requirement:

Required courses and clerkships four weeks or greater in length must provide formative assessment and feedback to students by the mid-point of the course or clerkship. Required courses or clerkships less than four weeks in length must provide alternate means by which medical students can measure their progress in learning.

Process:

  1. All required courses and clerkships which are four weeks or greater must provide formative assessment and feedback to each student by the mid-point of the course or rotation.
  2. Formative assessment is not recorded in the MSPE.
  3. Formative assessment may include, but is not limited to, quizzes, thought questions, practice exams, audience response systems and direct observations with verbal or written feedback.
  4. The Medical Education Curriculum Committee will monitor course and clerkship compliance with the delivery of formative assessment and feedback on at least an annual basis.
