Policy Statement:

All residents, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows (Non-Faculty Instructors) who teach and assess Keck School of Medicine students must be familiar with the School of Medicine educational objectives and policies and must be prepared for their roles in teaching and/or assessment.

Policy Requirement:

Residents and non-faculty instructors are required to participate in training sessions where they will review the relevant educational objectives and teaching and assessment methods pertaining to teaching Keck School students. Resident and non- faculty instructors’ teaching skills will be evaluated by students and faculty.

The Keck School of Medicine Department of Medical Education will collaborate with program directors and supervisors in the remediation of residents and non-faculty instructors who are identified as needing specific development of teaching and/or assessment skills.

Process:

  • The Resident and Non-Faculty Instructor Policy is distributed to affiliate residency program directors, site directors, or appropriate supervisors
  • Keck School of Medicine faculty will provide instruction to USC residents, and residents at affiliated sites on session, course, or clerkship objectives, information about clinical supervision, how to report mistreatment, preparation for their role as teachers and team leaders, how to give feedback, and methods of student assessment on an annual basis.
  • Participation in these trainings is documented and centrally monitored by the Assistant Dean for Medical Education. If a residency program provides its own training, the program director or supervisor must attest on an annual basis that the residents or non-faculty instructors receive the required training.
  • The Keck School of Medicine Department of Medical Education will identify residents and non-faculty instructors requiring remediation and additional training to enhance their teaching or assessment efforts and collaborate with program directors and supervisors within the appropriate program in that effort.
