Residency Program
The USC Department of Ophthalmology is dedicated to world-class patient care, research, and teaching of medical students, residents and fellows under the organizational umbrella of the USC Roski Eye Institute and the Los Angeles General Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology. The Los Angeles General Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology is academically affiliated with USC Keck School of Medicine, with all members of the USC Ophthalmology faculty cross-privileged at Los Angeles General Medical Center as well as Keck School of Medicine facilities. The Los Angeles General Medical Center/USC Roski Eye Institute Residency Program brings together the strengths of four remarkable institutions (Los Angeles General Medical Center, USC Roski Eye Institute, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Downtown Los Angeles Medical Center). These outstanding institutions, coupled with our faculty’s deep-rooted expertise and commitment, provide a wealth of opportunities for residents to experience a tremendous diversity, breadth, and complexity of clinical challenges within a supportive learning environment.
Residents are supervised and trained by full-time USC Keck School of Medicine faculty, voluntary part-time faculty from the community, well as cross-appointed faculty at CHLA and the VA. We train 7 residents per year. Residents are primarily based at Los Angeles General Medical Center for their first and third years of training, and spend significantly more time at the USC Roski Eye Institute, CHLA, and VA during their second year of residency. A unique aspect of the residency program is the Los Angeles General Medical Center longitudinal resident clinic where residents follow patients throughout their three-year residency from the initial evaluation and diagnosis to any procedures or surgical interventions the patients may need. We provide integrated exposure to clinics, conferences, and operating rooms at Los Angeles General Medical Center, USC Roski Eye Institute, CHLA, and the VA throughout the course of the three-year training.

The USC Roski Eye Institute has been ranked as a top ophthalmology department by U.S. News and World Report for 28 years.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles ranked among top five children’s hospitals in the U.S.
