About Our Top-Ranked Research Program

In our mission to preserve, protect and restore sight, the vision researchers at the USC Roski Eye Institute play a critical role in driving fundamental and translational research to advance patient care. Ranked #4 in NIH research funding, the ophthalmology departments scientists and clinicians conduct exemplary research with direct impact on improving diagnostic evaluation and treatment of major eye diseases, including age-related and hereditary macular degeneration, dry eye, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. The USC Roski Eye Institute has a rich and diverse research program that focuses on five research areas:

• Bioengineering and Nanotechnology – develop innovative implantable or wearable devices and unique drug delivery for sight restoration therapies.
• Epidemiology – population-based studies to understand the burden of eye disease, prevent vision impairment and impact eye health care policy
• Imaging – groundbreaking technology development to better understand the anatomy and physiology of the eye for advancing diagnostic evaluations
• Inflammation and Regeneration – understanding fundamental immune and inflammatory processes to enable development of new therapies
• Neuroregeneration – advance knowledge of pathogenesis of neurodegenerative eye diseases and mechanisms of retinal and cortical development
