About the Department

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine provides world-class emergency, trauma and medical services to Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents at LAC+USC Medical Center. The department is the county’s largest emergency department, the backbone of the county’s safety net for emergency care and the county’s “Flagship” trauma center providing more than 28 percent of all trauma care in Los Angeles County.

The department is also the sponsor of one of the largest CME events in Emergency Medicine, Essentials of Emergency Medicine, and offers one of the medical school’s most coveted clerkships, winning the award for Educational Excellence in 1997, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014. Our faculty hold or have held leadership positions in the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. Our alumni are spread throughout the nation practicing the specialty in every venue, from small practice groups to large academic centers.

Clinical Activities

The Department of Medicine’s clinical activities are based at LAC+USC Medical Center. The department is organized into functional units for ease of staffing and flow. Units include resuscitation, psychiatry and the urgent care clinic, among others.
